- Lasers of the HairMax produce healthier hair, prevents further hair loss, stimulates re-growth of hair
- HairMax Laser diode monochromatic and collimated operates in red portion of visible light spectrum
- Ex-vivo study showed laser energy from the HairMax applied to hair follicles stimulated elongation of hair
Hypothesis of Mechanism of Action
There have been many papers published on the mechanisms of action for low level laser therapy (LLLT). The papers hypothesize that LLLT in the red and near infra-red spectrum is absorbed by photo-receptors in the mitochondria. The photonic energy is able to release nitric oxide that is bound in the cytochrome C oxidase molecule of the cellular respiratory chain.
The release of NO facilitates the completion of the respiratory process resulting in increased production of ATP and regulation of reactive oxygen species. The released NO is a natural vasodilator, increasing microcirculation around the hair bulb. Increased ATP and microcirculation delay catagen onset and extend the anagen phase resulting in a thicker stronger hair.

Scientific studies have been performed showing that increases in the amount of the biological molecule *adenosine triphosphate, causes the individual cells to increase their activity. ATP is integral to the function of the cell as an “energy transporter”.
What Is Low Level Laser Therapy?
The HairMax LaserComb uses a laser diode operating in the red portion of the visible light spectrum and is different from natural light in many ways. First, it is monochromatic, meaning all the energy is essentially one wavelength or color whereas a light bulb produces a broad spectrum of light and energy waves.
Laser energy is also collimated which means it is a tight beam of light energy that spreads or diverges only a little at great distances while a light bulb loses its brightness very quickly with distance. Laser energy is also coherent: the waves of light energy produced by a laser are synched or in phase with each other. And while all light consists of waves of energy these waves, such as those in a light bulb, are not organized or in sync with each other. These characteristics make laser energy a truly unique form of light energy.
